VDIK: Passenger car market continues its positive course in August
Bad Homburg. The positive course in the German passenger car market continued in August 2017 with 253,679 new passenger car registrations and an increase of 3.5 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. In the first eight months of the year, a total of 2,324 million passenger cars were newly registered, an increase of 2.9 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The VDIK members increased their sales from January to August at around 9 percent significantly more than the overall market and improved their market share from 35.9 to now 38 percent.
The decline in the registrations of passenger cars with diesel engines amounted to 13.8 percent in August, which is more pronounced than in the first eight months (-10%). Their share of the total registrations is currently 41 percent.
New registrations of private customers reached around 99,000 units and rose by 6 percent in August compared to the same month of the previous year. Between January and August 2017, the private market grew by around 2.9 percent, reaching 818,000 new registrations, accounting for 35 percent of the passenger car market. With an increase of around 10 percent, the international manufacturers were able to increase their share in the private market to 47 percent.
VDIK President Reinhard Zirpel: “The growth of the total passenger car market by 66,000 units in the first eight months of 2017 is based solely on the increase in the sales of international manufacturers, which are growing by 74,000 vehicles. The VDIK members benefit particularly from the high acceptance of their models by the private customer. In this distribution channel, they record more than 35,000 new registrations and thus not only compensate for the decline of the other manufacturers, but also ensure the growth in this segment. “
