New registrations of purely battery electric passenger cars (BEV) rose by 8.7% to 34,479 units in September. The BEV share of total new passenger car registrations reached 16.5% – the highest figure since the beginning of the year. By comparison, the BEV market share in September 2023 was 14.1%. The year-on-year comparison is still characterized by a special effect in the BEV market: Due to the discontinuation of the BEV purchase premium for commercial customers from September 2023, the market for purely battery-electric cars had developed above average in a historical comparison, especially in August 2023, causing the BEV market to decline sharply in September 2023. Since the beginning of 2024, a total of 276,390 BEVs (-28.6%) have been newly registered, accounting for 13.1% of passenger car registrations.
In September, a total of 208,848 new passenger cars were registered in Germany, 110,721 of which had alternative drive systems (purely electric drive systems, hybrids with and without plugs and gas drive systems). The market for passenger cars with alternative drive systems is therefore up 4.8% compared to the same month last year. The proportion of new registrations with alternative drive systems rose to 53.0% in September, up from 47.0% in September 2023.
New registrations of vehicles with plug-in hybrid drive (PHEV) recorded a slight decline in September. 14,936 PHEVs rolled onto the roads, 2.9% fewer than in the same month last year. The share of new passenger car registrations rose to 7.2% (September 2023: 6.9%). From January to September 2024, 132,861 PHEVs were newly registered, 7.7% more than in the first nine months of 2023.
Together, electric vehicles (BEVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles) accounted for a market share of 23.7% in September with 49,415 new registrations. This corresponds to an increase of 4.9% compared to September last year. Since the beginning of the year, the market for electric vehicles has fallen by 19.9%. In the first nine months of the year, 409,285 new electric vehicles were registered. The share of the total passenger car market amounted to 19.3 percent.

Hybrid vehicles without plugs recorded an increase of 4.7 percent in September. 60,497 new registrations correspond to a 29.0 percent share of passenger car registrations (September 2023: 25.7 percent). In the first nine months of 2024, hybrid vehicles without plugs increased by 11.1% to 545,301 new registrations, taking their share to 25.8% (January-September 2023: 23.0%).
In addition, 769 LPG cars (+15.5%) and one natural gas car (-98.3%) rolled onto the roads in September.
New registrations of combustion passenger cars reached 98,124 units in September, of which 67,009 were petrol (-15.2%) and 31,115 diesel (-22.0%). The share of petrol cars in passenger car registrations was 32.1 percent, while diesel cars accounted for 14.9 percent. Since the beginning of the year, 770,999 petrol cars (+2.7 percent) and 379,548 diesel cars (+1.3 percent) have been newly registered.
