In November, new car registrations in Germany fell by 0.5% compared to the same month last year, corresponding to 244,544 vehicles. Adjusted for calendar effects, taking into account one less working day in October 2024, this results in year-on-year growth of +4.3%. A total of 2,592,610 new passenger cars have been registered since the beginning of the year, which corresponds to a slight decrease of 0.4% compared to the same period last year. This is according to the analysis of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) by the Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDIK).
In November 2024, 35,167 new purely battery-electric passenger cars (BEVs) rolled onto the roads, a decrease of 21.8% compared to the same month last year. The BEV market share was therefore 14.4% of all new passenger car registrations. Since the beginning of the year, new BEV registrations have amounted to 347,048 passenger cars (-26.1%).
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) recorded growth of 13.7% in November 2024 compared to the same month last year, with a total of 20,604 new registrations. The PHEV market share in November was therefore 8.4%, which, after the provisional peak in October 2024, once again corresponds to the highest market share since the end of the PHEV purchase incentive in December 2022. A total of 172,802 plug-in hybrids have been newly registered since the beginning of the year, which corresponds to growth of 9.5%.
In total, electric vehicles – i.e. BEVs and PHEVs combined – accounted for 55,771 new car registrations in November, 11.6% fewer than in the same month last year. Their market share was 22.8% (November 2023: 25.7%). Between January and November 2024, 519,850 new electric passenger cars were registered, a decrease of 17.1% compared to the same period last year.
The number of new commercial vehicle registrations in November was 37,675, 18.4% higher than in November of the previous year. Since the beginning of the year, new registrations total 352,650 commercial vehicles (+6.1%).
