Due to statistical base effects, new registrations of passenger cars with alternative drive systems (pure electric drive, hybrids with and without plugs and gas) recorded a strong increase at the beginning of the year. In January, 90,888 vehicles with alternative drive systems were newly registered in Germany, 29.7% more than in January of the previous year. The growth is due in particular to the very weak January 2023, which suffered greatly from purchases brought forward at the end of 2022. The share of alternative drive systems in total passenger car registrations reached 42.6% in January and was therefore lower than in 2023 as a whole (48.5%).
Registrations of purely battery electric vehicles (BEV) grew by 23.9% to 22,474 units. The reason for the growth here is also the weak January of the previous year, when the reduction in the BEV environmental bonus had a negative impact. The BEV registration share was 10.5% in January 2024. In 2023 as a whole, this figure was still over 18%.
New registrations of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rose by 62.6% to 14,394 units. The share of total registrations reached 6.7%.
At 24.4 percent, hybrid vehicles without plugs continue to have the largest market share of alternatively powered vehicles. Registrations grew by 24.3% to 52,102 units. Of these, 7,625 full hybrid vehicles (up 10.7%) and 44,477 mild hybrids (up 27%) were newly registered.
1,899 liquid gas passenger cars (up 77.8 percent) and 14 passenger cars powered by natural gas were newly registered in January, as well as 5 fuel cell passenger cars.

With 81,724 new registrations (up 16.9 percent), petrol cars achieved a market share of 38.3 percent in January. 40,936 diesel cars (up 4.3 percent) were registered, which corresponds to a share of 19.2 percent.
