A total of 224,721 new passenger cars were registered in Germany in December, 124,355 of which had alternative drive systems (purely electric, hybrids with and without plugs and gas-powered). This is 4.0% less than in the same month last year. The share of new registrations with alternative drive systems in the overall market rose to 55.3% in December. In December 2023, it was still 53.6%.
Cumulatively, 1,342,013 new vehicles with alternative drive systems rolled onto the roads in 2024 as a whole. This corresponds to a decrease of 2.7% compared to the previous year. In 2024, the market share of alternative drive systems reached 47.6% after 48.5% in 2023. The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of alternative drive systems thus rose by 1.6 percentage points to 43.1% in 2024.
Non-plug-in-Hybrid vehicles achieved a significant increase of 26.7% in December 2024. 70,570 new registrations correspond to a 31.4% share of passenger car registrations (December 2023: 23.0%). Between January and December 2024, hybrid vehicles without plugs increased by 13.7% to 755,493 new registrations, with their share rising to 26.8% (full year 2023: 23.4%). The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of hybrids thus rose by 3.6 percentage points to 47.3% in 2024.
In contrast, new registrations of purely battery electric passenger cars (BEV) fell by 38.6% to 33,561 units in December. The BEV share of total new passenger car registrations reached 14.9%. In comparison: in December 2023, the BEV market share was 22.6%, after a reduction in purchase subsidies in 2024 had been assumed at the end of the year. Since the beginning of 2024, a total of 380,609 BEVs (-27.4%) have been newly registered, accounting for 13.5% of passenger car registrations.
New registrations of vehicles with plug-in hybrid drive (PHEV) once again recorded an increase in December. 19,103 PHEVs rolled onto the roads, 6.8% more than in the same month last year. The share of all new passenger car registrations rose to 8.5% (December 2023: 7.4%), which once again corresponds to the highest PHEV market share since the end of the purchase subsidy for plug-in hybrids at the end of 2022, following the highs in the previous months. In 2024 as a whole, 191,905 PHEVs were newly registered, which is 9.2% more than in 2023. The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of plug-in hybrids thus rose by 2.6 percentage points to 38.0% in 2024.
Together, electric vehicles (BEVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles) therefore accounted for a market share of 23.4% in December with 52,672 new registrations. This corresponds to a decline of 27.4% compared to December of the previous year. Since the beginning of the year, the market for electric vehicles has fallen by 18.2%. This means that 572,672 electric vehicles were newly registered in 2024. The share of the total passenger car market was 20.3 percent.
