A total of 203,434 new passenger cars were registered in Germany in February, 114,406 of which had alternative drive systems (purely electric, hybrids with and without plugs and gas-powered). This is 16.6% more than in the same month last year, which was still weak due to subsidies. The share of new registrations with alternative drive systems in the overall market rose to 56.2% in February. This is the highest figure since August 2023, compared to 45.1% in February 2024. The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of alternative drive systems was 42.3% in February 2025. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 226,729 passenger cars with alternative drive systems have been newly registered, 20% more than in the same period last year. This puts their market share at 55.2% in the first two months of the year.

Hybrid vehicles without plugs achieved an increase of 6.1% in February. 58,153 new registrations correspond to a 28.6% share of passenger car registrations (February 2024: 25.2%). The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of hybrids was therefore 46.9% in February 2025. Since the beginning of the year, new hybrid registrations have totaled 117,405 passenger cars (+9.8%).

New registrations of purely battery-electric passenger cars (BEV) once again saw a significant increase of 30.8% to 35,949 units in February. This growth must be seen against the backdrop of a still weak prior-year month following the abrupt end of private e-purchase subsidies at the end of 2023. The BEV share of total new passenger car registrations reached 17.7% in February. The share of international manufacturers in the BEV market was 34.0%. Since the beginning of the year, the BEV market has grown by around 41.0% compared to the same period last year, with 70,447 new registrations. The cumulative BEV market share is therefore 17.1%. International brands account for around 37.5% of all new BEV registrations since January 2025.

New registrations of vehicles with plug-in hybrid drive (PHEV) also recorded an increase again in February. 19,534 PHEVs rolled onto the roads, 34.0% more than in the same month last year. The share of all new passenger car registrations rose to 9.6%, which, following the highs in previous months, is once again by far the highest PHEV market share since the end of the purchase subsidy for plug-in hybrids at the end of 2022. The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of plug-in hybrids thus rose by 6.5 percentage points to 41.8% in February, and cumulatively since the beginning of the year it has even reached 42.8%. A total of 37,246 PHEVs have been newly registered since January, 28.6% more than in the same period last year.

Together, electric vehicles (BEVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles) therefore accounted for a market share of 27.3% in February with 55,486 new registrations. This corresponds to an increase of 31.9% compared to February last year. In the first two months of 2025, new electric registrations totaled 107,698 vehicles (+36.4 percent).

In addition, 767 LPG passenger cars (-38.6 percent) also rolled onto the roads in February. Since the beginning of the year, new registrations of LPG passenger cars amount to 1,626 units (-48.3 percent).

New registrations of combustion passenger cars reached 89,027 units in February, of which 56,911 were petrol (-26.2%) and 32,116 diesel (-23.8%). Petrol cars accounted for 28.0 percent of passenger car registrations, while diesel cars accounted for 15.8 percent. A total of 184,341 combustion cars have been newly registered since the beginning of the year (-23.8 percent).
Cumulatively, 1,342,013 new vehicles with alternative drive systems rolled onto the roads in 2024 as a whole. This corresponds to a decrease of 2.7% compared to the previous year. In 2024, the market share of alternative drive systems reached 47.6% after 48.5% in 2023. The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of alternative drive systems thus rose by 1.6 percentage points to 43.1% in 2024.

Hybrid vehicles without plugs achieved a significant increase of 26.7% in December 2024. 70,570 new registrations correspond to a 31.4% share of passenger car registrations (December 2023: 23.0%). Between January and December 2024, hybrid vehicles without plugs increased by 13.7% to 755,493 new registrations, with their share rising to 26.8% (full year 2023: 23.4%). The international vehicle manufacturers’ market share of hybrids thus rose by 3.6 percentage points to 47.3% in 2024.
