In July, 111,724 passenger cars with alternative drive systems (purely electric, hybrids with and without plugs and gas-powered vehicles) were newly registered in Germany. This corresponds to a drop of 4.8 percent compared to the same month last year. The proportion of new registrations with alternative drive systems fell to 46.9% in July, down from 48.3% in July 2023. A total of 757,373 new vehicles with alternative drive systems were registered between January and July. This corresponds to an increase of 1.1% compared to the same period last year. In the first half of 2024, the share of alternative drive systems reached 44.3% after 45.7% in the same period in 2023.

New registrations of purely battery electric passenger cars (BEV) fell by 36.8% to 30,762 units in July. The BEV share of total new passenger car registrations reached 12.9%. In July 2023, it was still 20.0%. Due to the discontinuation of the BEV purchase premium for commercial customers from September 2023, the market for purely battery-electric passenger cars developed above average in historical comparison, especially in August 2023, but also to a lesser extent in the previous months. Since the beginning of 2024, a total of 214,887 BEVs (-20.1%) have been newly registered, accounting for 12.6% of passenger car registrations.

New registrations of vehicles with plug-in hybrid drive (PHEV) recorded a slight increase in July. 14,811 PHEVs rolled onto the roads, 3.2% more than in the same month last year. The share of new passenger car registrations rose to 6.2% (July 2023: 5.9%). From January to July 2024, 104,360 PHEVs were newly registered, which is 11.7% more than in the first seven months of 2023.

Together, electric vehicles (BEVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles) accounted for a market share of 19.1% in July with 45,573 new registrations. This corresponds to a decline of 27.7 percent compared to July last year. Since the beginning of the year, the market for electric vehicles has fallen by 11.9%. In the first seven months, 319,281 new electric vehicles were registered. The share of the total passenger car market amounted to 18.7 percent.

Hybrid vehicles without plugs achieved positive growth of 22.4 percent in July. 65,059 new registrations correspond to a 27.3 percent share of passenger car registrations (July 2023: 21.8 percent). In the first seven months of 2024, hybrid vehicles without plugs increased by 13.7% to 429,025 new registrations, with their share rising to 25.1% (January-July 2023: 23.0%).

In addition, 1,078 LPG passenger cars (+8.8%) and 3 natural gas passenger cars (-98.6%) were newly registered in July.

New registrations of combustion passenger cars reached 126,512 units in July, of which 83,405 were petrol (+/- 0.0%) and 43,107 diesel (+1.4%). Petrol cars accounted for 35.0 percent of passenger car registrations, while diesel cars accounted for 18.1 percent. Since the beginning of the year, 633,983 petrol cars (+6.4 percent) and 318,459 diesel cars (+7.9 percent) have been newly registered.
