Bad Homburg. With 316,405 new registrations, August recorded a strong increase of 25 percent compared to the same month last year. The result is significantly influenced by the WLTP test procedure valid from September. In the first eight months of the year, 2,473,284 new passenger cars were registered, an increase of 6.4 percent. In this environment, VDIK member companies can further increase their market share from 38.0 to 38.8 percent.
In addition to the increase in new registrations due to the switch to WLTP, the private market continues to make a significant contribution to growth with an increase of 4 percent. In the first eight months of the year, around 916,500 new passenger cars were registered privately, an increase of 12 percent. The VDIK member companies are exceptionally successful in the private market. They account for 46.3 percent of all registrations.
In the wake of strong growth in August, new registrations of diesel passenger cars also rose by 8 percent. However, this has little effect on the overall decline in new diesel registrations. After eight months, 796,599 new diesel passenger cars were registered, a decline of 16 percent. Diesel passenger cars now account for 32.2 percent of the total market.
VDIK President Reinhard Zirpel: “The particularly strong growth in August does not allow any statement on the state of the market due to the special conditions, even if private demand remains stable. Early approvals will have an impact on the following months. For the year as a whole, however, I continue to expect an increase in new registrations.”
